Tax and accounting services in Iqaluit, Nunavut

Accurate, on-time filings and planning that keeps more of your money working for you. We file for Nunavut residents and Nunavut businesses, which means we work with the northern deductions and the remittance deadlines every year rather than looking them up once.

Personal income tax (T1)

Returns for employees, self-employed people and retirees. Living in Nunavut puts you in the highest northern residents deduction zone, which covers both a residency amount and eligible travel — and it is the single most commonly under-claimed item we see on returns prepared elsewhere. We work through what you are actually entitled to, including medical travel, and we keep the documentation in case the CRA asks.

Corporate income tax (T2)

Corporate returns, from the first year after incorporation through to more involved structures. We look at how you take money out of the company, not just what the company earned, because the split between salary and dividends is usually where the real decision sits. If we also keep your books, the return is a by-product of work already done rather than a scramble in the spring.

Tax planning & compliance

Planning is what happens before the year closes, while the outcome can still change. We look at timing, at how a business is structured, and at what is coming — a sale, a purchase, a succession — and we flag compliance obligations before they become arrears. Interest and penalties are avoidable, and they are the most expensive way to learn a deadline.

GST/HST & payroll remittances

Nunavut charges the 5% GST with no territorial sales tax on top, which is simpler than most provinces — but the remittance schedule is unforgiving, and payroll source deductions are the filing the CRA pursues most aggressively. We register you, calculate what is owed, file on schedule and keep you current.

Common questions

What do you need to prepare my personal tax return?

Your T4s and any other slips, receipts for deductions, and — importantly in Nunavut — your travel records and rent or housing costs for the northern residents deduction. If you have filed with us before, we already hold most of the history.

What is the northern residents deduction worth?

Nunavut sits in the highest-benefit zone, and the deduction has two parts: a residency amount for each day you lived here, and a travel component for eligible trips. It is the item most often under-claimed on returns prepared outside the territory, and it is frequently worth more than people expect.

Do you file for businesses as well as individuals?

Yes — personal (T1) and corporate (T2) returns, GST and payroll remittances. If we also keep your books, the return is assembled from work already done rather than reconstructed each spring.

Can you fix returns from previous years?

Usually. Prior-year returns can be adjusted, and unfiled years can be brought current. If there are arrears, dealing with them deliberately is almost always better than waiting for the CRA to act.

Before the deadline, not after

The best time to talk to an accountant is before the year ends, while there is still something to decide. Bring us last year's return and we will tell you what we would have done differently.
